EXAMINATIONS

Dental check ups for kids are very important for us to work out how healthy (or unhealthy) a mouth is.
The examination is super easy and generally very fun.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

We use our eyes, a mirror and sometimes air to dry the teeth. It is also common for us to take radiographs (x-rays) to help us see in between the teeth and under the gums. After we have finished the examination, we usually have a conversation about what we diagnosed and how to ensure your child’s mouth stays as healthy as possible.

The first dental check up for kids with us will take a bit longer than you would expect at your general dentist. This is so we can ask you lots of questions and work out the best way to manage your child, taking into consideration any challenges you may currently have.

SPECIAL NEEDS

Special needs children and adolescents are a particular areas of interest for our practice. Dr Sarah and Dr Tim both have extensive training with special needs children and are very comfortable with a wide range of developmental and medical conditions that may affect your child.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

It is very important to start seeing a dentist from an early age, usually before 1 year of age, to help desensitise your child to the dentist and prevent and manage any conditions we may find. This is even more important for special needs children as they (and their families) can have many other challenges that require lots of attention.

Before seeing us, if you are comfortable, please let us know your child has special needs and what environments they find the most comfortable. This may include the time of day, lighting, noise and touching. This information can help us to perform the best examination for your child.

INFANT ORAL HEALTH EXAMS

We know that having a new child can be a very busy and stressful time. Ensuring that your child has a healthy mouth from birth is the first major step in achieving a healthy mouth as an adult. This is probably one of the most important examinations your child can ever have.

Research has shown that if you have a dental exam before 2 years of age you will need less dental treatment throughout your life.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

The first dental examination should occur when the first baby tooth has appeared into the mouth or before 12 months of age. This examination is quick and easy, but can help us to identify if there are any issues that may come up in the future.
